Welcome to the latest weekly series I’m introducing to the blog! I love movies almost as much as a love books (although not quite, let’s not go mad) I have a collection of roughly 200 dvds and am almost always watching Netflix. It has in fact got to the stage where I pretty much just rewatch the same things over and over.
Do I have a problem? Possibly.
Is that the point of this post? No.
I thought it would be cool to share some of my favourite movies throughout the weeks so without further ado allow me to share my choice for this week:
That one kid from Gossip Girl is all grown up in this odd little number. It cropped up on Netflix recently, and actually, it was my boyfriend’s choice (we have an ongoing battle to not be the one to pick the movie). I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen the first Stake Land movie, and we pressed play on this half expecting it to be a dire attempt at vampiric horror and having to pick something else to watch.
What we got instead was a surprisingly interesting take on the monster movie genre, with a plot line that was not only coherent but was actually pretty decent. It reminded me of a softer version of the Evil Dead movies, not quite as heavy on the gore but equally as hoaky and off-kilter. The story itself wasn’t particularly long, the characters got shit done, but a beautiful soundtrack and numerous landscape shots set the tone for a lonely, savage post-apocalyptic world. I was left wanting to know more about the lore of the film – what makes Mother different from the Berserker Vampires? – so you’ll catch me watching the first of the series very soon!
If you like vampires, a good amount of gore and bloodsuckers in a film that really doesn’t take itself too seriously, then this is the film for you.
